Christian has been working for Box & Charnock for the past two years and is currently an apprentice electrician based on the Abbey Homes Gatehouse development in Aylesbury.
“The work is very varied and I do different things each day but at the moment I am putting the ducting in for the ventilation services which is a job that I enjoy,” said Christian. “I can’t pick and choose what I do as everything has to be completed in a logical sequence, especially when the other trades are involved. If I don’t finish my part of the job then it may prevent the plumbers from completing their work which could hold up the project. We therefore all have to work as part of a team which is great as the guys here are friendly and are happy to help out if someone has a problem,” said Christian.
Gatehouse is a very busy site with various tradesmen, visitors and delivery vehicles coming and going on a daily basis. “Our own safety and that of those around us is a top priority. We have regular talks from our health and safety rep which help reinforce what we have learnt at college. We all have a responsibility to be safety aware and so for example, if I see a fork lift being operated I will acknowledge the driver so he knows I am working in the area,” said Christian.
Christian prefers the practical side of the work and “enjoys working out on site – even when it is cold, for me it is better than working in an office.”
As part of the apprentice programme, Christian’s progress is monitored by a NVQ assessor who visits the site on a regular basis to assess his practical work. At the end of the three year term, Christian will need to pass a final exam in order to become a fully qualified NVQ level 3 electrician.
“Five years from now I want to be a fully qualified electrician. Box & Charnock are a great company to work for and completing my apprenticeship will give me a valuable skill and a job for life and that appeals to me.”
Outside work Christian enjoys socialising and cycling.
